The Oscar-winning actress was the guest of honour at a star-studded gala, where she received the award for her independent movie work.

Theron, who has appeared in low-budget pictures such as North Country, In the Valley of Elah and The Burning Plain, was handed the prize by Patton Oswalt, her co-star in new movie Young Adult, Contactmusic reported.

"I never feel worthy of these things, so thank you to Variety, thank you," she said while receiving the award.
