Efforts made by cops to catch the still-elusive murderers of the renowned rationalist are bearing fruit in unexpected ways, as they inadvertently discover evidences pertaining to cases of fugitive rapists and robber
While their hunt for the killers of Dr Narendra Dabholkar may not have been fruitful so far, police have, however, managed to solve a few pending cases while investigating the sensational broad daylight murder.
Three such cases have been cracked in the recent past wherein the police teams searching for Dr Dabholkar’s assassins’ secured crucial information about absconding suspects and accused in other serious crimes.

The vital leads guided the Crime Branch’s anti-dacoity squad to fugitive Umesh Raghunath Waghulkar who was absconding since 2002 after he was released on bail by a local court.
After getting information on his whereabouts, cops arrested Mulshi resident Waghulkar on Tuesday, who was earlier convicted in a criminal conspiracy and extortion case, and had been sentenced to a 3-year jail term.
Earlier, on September 16, Hanumant Nanaware, another absconding accused in the rape and murder case of IT designer professional Rupali Chavan was nabbed by the Crime Branch sleuths. Other cases related to house break-ins are also being detected while the police are searching for Dabholkar’s killers.
PI Raghunath Phuge, anti-dacoity squad, said, “While we were working on the Dabholkar murder case, we got information on the whereabouts of Waghulkar and his accomplice Santosh Witkar. Accordingly, we laid a trap and nabbed the duo on Marunji road near Hinjewadi. We have recovered firearms, five live cartridges, a car and other valuable items from them.”
Another senior official of the Crime Branch, on condition of anonymity, said, “It is true that investigations into the Dabholkar murder case has led us to crucial information, clues and whereabouts of absconding criminals and other suspects. We are confident that many such cases will be cracked along with the Dabholkar case.”
While investigating the murder of Dabholkar, the cops on September 26 also arrested of Akshay Ram Pacharne (20), a resident of Kalewadi in Pimpri, who had escaped from police custody. He was being brought to Hadapsar from Baramati by an ST bus, and was being taken to Yerawada by a police constable. After he fled, cops received information about him from a blacksmith who they were in contact with while tracing Dabholkar’s killers.
The metalworker told cops Pacharne had visited him to get rid of his handcuffs.
