An uncle-nephew duo helps CWG enthusiasts put their best face forward

Despite all the bad blood around the Commonwealth Games, Sunday's opening ceremony did bring out the nationalistic fervour in visitors and spectators. Doing their bit were Ramesh Chawla (45) and Deepak Chawla (25). The uncle and nephew had strategically placed themselves next to gate number 9 of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. They were seen painting the tricolour on the cheeks of sports enthusiasts.

"I have no idea about the Commonwealth Games. My nephew knows such things and he brought me here," said Ramesh Chawala.

Ramesh and Dinesh charge 40 to 50 rupees from each client. Their business plan was formulated in Jaipur, where Deepak had gone for an interview to a company while the India-Australia ODI series was on.

"I didn't get the job. Then I went to the stadium where the India- Australia match was on. Outside the stadium I saw a man who was painting the tricolour on people's cheeks. I too got my cheeks painted, but after that he demanded 50 rupees from me. I was surprised; I thought the service was for free but I paid him and after that the idea of making money came to my mind and I decided to implement it," said Deepak.

The duo earned a lot of money when the IPL was on. They hunt for events and rush to the spot with paint and brushes.

"I brought paint for 70 rupees and earned 3000 rupees from that. During the IPL series we earned around 60,000 rupees," Deepak added.

But this time Deepak faced some problems in reaching on the spot and in painting cheeks."I started from Bhiwani at 10 in the morning and reached only at 4 pm.

There was a huge problem of public transport. I missed the crucial time of business. Then while we were busy painting people, we realised that the paint had dried up. We tried to find some water but all the shops were closed. Somehow we managed to find some water and made some money," he said. The duo will stay at a friend's house in Delhi for the next ten days.
