When junk food is the key to save time in today’s fast-paced world, being fit is crucial. There are countless methods to stay robust and athletic, some prefer to jog and cycle; the rest enroll in a gym. Before starting your sessions at the gym, here’s a handy guidebook on how to behave and what to wear in the gymnasium.

What to wear
Designer Narresh of Shivvan-Narresh fame, suggests avoiding wearing cotton track pants. “Fabrics that stick to the body but allows one to perspire and breathe are important. People have a delusion that one should wear natural fabrics at the gym,” he says, talking about the functionality and movement in any sportswear.

“However, lot of styling can be done for leisure outfits. In India, sports brands are pretty boring with what they offer. We are a young country with the youth who are fitness-conscious, so there is lot left to be desired,” he adds. In hindsight, tights are the talk of the town — calf-length, thigh-length and ankle-length are the popular ones. “Sports bras in various styles, tank tops worn over them can be worn but more layering is possible,” points Narresh. However, women usually stick to a basic track pant and a tight hair band at the gym these days. They like to invest more on protein shakes.

Shoes to choose
Parulekar, a lecturer for six years, recommends different shoes for cardio and weight training. “Cardio shoes have a foam-like body below the foot, a shock absorber kind. But while lifting weights, the legs need to be more stable. It shouldn’t be on a soft surface. Hence, a hard sole is ideal for weights,” he reasons, adding that a carrying along a towel or a napkin are a must in the gym. Designer Narresh stresses the need to wear socks in a gym. “These needs to changed everyday. Even when you see people who appear as they haven’t worn, they are actually wearing deep ankle ones that don’t show,” he says.
