Instead of using explosive detection kits given by DRDO, which could have detected that RDX was used in Bakery blast, cops waited three days for laboratory report

It took the Pune police three days to determine that RDX was used in the explosion that ripped the German Bakery apart on Saturday. Had they used the latest mini explosive detection kit given to them by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), they would have known this in minutes.

However, instead of using the kit, the Pune police went through the rigmarole of collecting samples, sending it to the forensic lab for analysis and waiting for results. The blast occurred on February 13 and it was only on February 17 that Commissioner Satyapal Singh announced that RDX was used in the explosive cocktail.

HEMRL spokesperson Manish Bharadwaj, said, "I am not authorised to speak on this sensitive issue." However, Dr A Subhananda Rao, director,u00a0 HEMRL, had said in an interview to MiD DAY on December 10 last year that prototypes of these kits have been given to the Force One commandos, police and other agencies.

Bhaskarrao Misar, the former Director General of Police, said, "Quick identification of explosive used in a blast helps one gather vital clues about the terrorist groups, who tend to repeat what they do. If the cops had this detection device,u00a0 they should have used it immediately to identify the explosive." DCP Ravindra Sengaonkar refused to comment on the subject.
