Nearly 7,000 trucks stay off the road; supply of milk, medicine, vegetables and LPG will not be hit

THE Nationwide transporters' strike received 100 per cent response in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad area with nearly 5,000 trucks staying off the road.

"The response has been 100 per cent and nearly 5,000 trucks stayed off the roads," said Prakash Gavli President of the Maharashtra Rajya Truck, Tempo, Tankers, Bus Transport Mahasangh. He said a meeting has been scheduled with Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to resolve the issue.

According to him, the inbound and outbound trucks have been badly affected by the strike. "As a result, industries in and around Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad will be badly affected. Octroi revenue is also likely take a severe dip," he added.

A spokesman of the All India Motor Transporters Association said transport of essential commodities such as medicine, milk, vegetables and LPG have been kept out of the strike City traders depend heavily on supply of foodgrains, edible oil and dry fruits from states like Punjab, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

According to rough estimates nearly 1,200 trucks come to the market yard with different commodities every day.
