City sees at least 205 Holi injuries

Festivities on Holi kept hospitals on their toes yesterday, especially in the western suburbs where Cooper Hospital and Bhagwati Hospital together saw over 150 cases brought in.

Three fatalities due to drowning were registered at Cooper and around five admissions were made in assault cases. The rest were minor assault injuries and accident wounds that were treated on an OPD basis.

A 25-year-old patient was admitted to the ophthalmology department of JJ Hospital. "A water balloon hit him in the face and he has sustained a serious injury to the eye. We have kept him for observation," said Dr T P Lahane, head of ophthalmology at JJ Hospital.

The legend of Holi
According to mythology, Holika was told by her demon-king brother Hiranyakashyap to enter a blazing fire with his son Prahlad in her lap. Hiranyakashyap was angry with Prahlad, as his son refused to worship him. But Holika, who could enter a fire unscathed, died, as the boon worked only when she entered the fire alone.

Prahlad, who kept chanting the name of Lord Naarayana all the while, came out unharmed, as the lord blessed him for his extreme devotion.

Thus, Holi derives its name from Holika and is celebrated as a festival of victory of good over evil.
