Despite spending Rs 23 crore last year, the Pune Municipal Corporation has identified roads spanning around 300 kms to be repaired before monsoons
Despite completing road repair work worth Rs 23 crore last year before the monsoons, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) road department has identified 272 roads in the city for repairs this year as well.

The selected roads cover an area of about 300 kms spanning over different parts of the city. “A team of city engineers have been conducting a survey since a month. They surveyed an area of 3 lakh sq mts and identified specific patches for repair work. It covers almost all parts of the city and includes major roads like Tilak road, Karve road, JM road and FC road,” said Pramod Nirbhavane, Additional City Engineer (Roads).
The repair work will start by end of April and is expected to be completed before June end. “Repair work includes resurfacing, levelling and filling the cracks. Potholes are created due to uneven roads after monsoons. To avoid that, we will fill cracks and maintain the level by using tar. The cost is still to be finalised,” Nirbhavane added.
Last year, PMC had appointed five contractors and allotted road repair work worth of Rs 23 crore. “Even newly constructed roads need maintenance before monsoons. Most of the work is very minor. It does not mean that last year’s work was not done properly,” he added.
“They never disclose details of the work done. Actually last year’s work should be scrutinised properly. There is lot of malpractices involved in the road repair work. Every year, PMC spends crores in road-related work but despite that people still face problems while travelling,” said Vivek Velankar, civic activist.u00a0
