Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and upcoming star Virat Kohli were also awarded for their achievements.
Tendulkar was felicitated for 100 international hundreds, while Kohli won the ‘Polly Umrigar Award’ for the best Indian cricketer of the 2011-12 season.
Batting stalwart VVS Laxman, who retired before the Test series against New Zealand in July, was also felicitated for his achievements in the international arena.
Tendulkar thanked Gavaskar after receiving the award and called him his inspiration for taking up the game. “We grew up watching you. Thanks for inspiring me to play cricket. All I wanted to do was to follow your footsteps,” said Tendulkar.
