Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng labelled Arsenal as the ‘toughest draw’ for the defending champions after the two giants were drawn against each other in the Last 16 stage of the Champions League.
Boateng told Bayern’s official site: “They (Arsenal) are the toughest opponents we could have had. They will be totally up for it after what happened last year. Both matches will be very intense.”
Bayern had beaten the Gunners owing to the Away Goals rule in the same stage last season, thanks to their first leg 3-1 win in London which gave them victory despite a 0-2 loss in the second leg.
Bayern captain Philipp Lahm added: “It’s a prestigious tie but a tough opponent. It was the hardest draw amongst the second-placed teams. Arsenal are certainly not a team you would hope to face.”
Bayern’s director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge too lamented the draw. “There were more manageable and easier opponents in the hat, but we can’t change it,” he said.
“We know we have to approach Arsenal with great respect, and that’s what we will do. We’ll have to turn in two very good performances,” he added.
