Photographer Ravikumar Kashi aims to make people look at walls differently with his latest exhibition, Remembered Abstractions

Clicked, for 100 years

“For several years now, I have been taking photographs of walls and other surfaces. Others have done that too. The difference is that while choosing the wall or a particular frame I bring my artistic sensibility, experience and knowledge of art history into play,” says Ravikumar Kashi, who is not just a photographer, but also a painter, sculptor and installation artist.

Kashi, who is currently showcasing his works in the city, started taking these photographs in 2006 at a time when it hadn’t even struck him to make a collection out of it. It was much later that while showing it to his friends, the idea of exhibiting them shaped up.

“These photographs have been shot at different times and various locales including Mexico, US, Korea, China, Jordan and India amongst other countries,” he shares. The most unique thing about the exhibition is that the collection of 20 prints that have been curated from about 600 photographs, are printed on 310 gsm German paper, which is 100% cotton, acid free and archival paper.

“This is one of the best papers to print on. It can take in the intensity of the colour and hold on to all the details. It is archival quality and is supposed to last 100 years at least,” explains the artist.
