Late on Saturday, one of the coaches of a local train derailed inside the Mahim yard, where trains are parked.
Just before the monsoon hit Mumbai, the Mahim yard had undergone a major overhauling and remodelling to accommodate 12-car trains on the Harbour line.
Although it didn’t affect train services — as the coach derailed inside the Mahim yard at 1.50 am and was rerailed at 4.15 am — it shows poor maintenance of WR. Sources said the derailment happened on the same section where the remodelling was carried out.
During the remodelling, tracks were changed and platforms extended to accommodate 12-car trains, and there were other developments. “An investigation is on and we have set up a committee,” said Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager (Mumbai), WR.
Officials claimed that the previous incidents of disruption at Mahim were due to battery thefts inside the substation, and waterlogging due to which points failed and prevented trains from switching tracks, and other issues. On May 31, another coach had derailed at Lower Parel while going into the yard.
