The 26 year-old was to be married later this month; police suspect a love affair gone wrong

In what is probably, a love affair gone terribly wrong, a 26 year-oldu00a0 compounder committed suicide on Friday using a self-administered lethal drip.

Sawant was preparing for his wedding and had booked a flat in Virar (East).

Malad resident Gurunath Sawant died on Friday

"He had asked for a 10-day leave starting from April 22 for his wedding. Perhaps the families did not approve of the match. Lately, Sawant had been looking depressed and was always on the phone," said Dr Gadge.

Rajshri Sawant, the deceased's mother, discovered his body on Friday, after she grew suspicious when Sawant did not emerge from his room after a few hours. Finding his door locked, she asked her neighbours for help to break down the door. "I saw him lying with a saline bottle hanging from a red cloth. For a minute, I simply could not understand what had happened," said an inconsolable Rajshri.

Left work early
According to Gadge, Sawant left work early on Friday. "He left early saying he needed to pay an installment for the flat he had booked. But I was shocked to get a call from his family at 5 pm saying he had committed suicide," said Gadge.

The police found a receipt of Riddhi Siddhi Developers and Builders amounting to Rs 55,000 in Sawant's pocket.
Sawant's body was taken to Bhagwati Hospital, Borivli (West) for postmortem, and the Malad police station has registered a case of accidental death.

Officials are examining his phone records to find whom he had called in his final moments. According to the neighbours who were present at the time Sawant's body was found, his phone was lit up. "Perhaps he was talking to that girl (Sawant's fiancee)," said a neighbour, who did not wish to be named.
