Con artist who duped Bollywood star Urmila Matondkar arrested

A serial conman, who posing as a travel agent, has swindled several people including Bollywood star Urmila Matondkar on the pretext of booking flight tickets was arrested by the Bandra police on Wednesday

A conman, who posed as a travel agent in front of his victims, including Bollywood star Urmila Matondkar, and cheated them on pretext of booking flight tickets was arrested by the Bandra police on Wednesday


The accused identified as Hemal Mehta, 34, is a resident of Malad and wanted in connection with several cases of cheating.

DCP Satyanarayan Chaudhary of zone 9 said, “The accused has several cheating cases against him. Six months ago he was arrested by Bandra police for cheating Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar. We are investigating on how many more people he has cheated.”

According to police officials from Bandra police station, last year in December the accused had taken Rs 4.65 lakhs from a Bandra-based jeweler. The jeweler had booked tickets for Singapore and Dubai through Mehta and paid him an advance of Rs 4.65 lakhs after which the accused had gone into hiding.

A police officer said, “We were looking for him from a very long time. He has several cases against him in Mumbai, all cheating cases.”

On Wednesday, cops got a tip off about his location and a team, headed by API Sandeep Shinde from Bandra police station, arrested him from Andheri (West).

Mehta was produced in the Bandra court on Thursday and remanded to police custody while the cops are investigating the matter.
