Cong-NCP promises probe into 16 years of 'misrule'

Promising to restore the city to its former glory, NCP chief Sharad Pawar supported CM Prithviraj Chavan's vow to conduct an inquiry into the alleged corruption during the Sena-BJP rule

THE Congress-NCP began its campaign trail for the BMC elections, scheduled on February 16, with a clarion call to save the city from corruption and restore it to its past glory and bring it in on par with global standards.

Terming the 16 years of Shiv Sena and BJP at power as misrule, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said his government would not hesitate to conduct an inquiry of the corruption during the 16-year saffron reign before a modest gathering of a few thousand people at PWD grounds in Bandra (East). His views were endorsed by NCP supreme Sharad Pawar, who appealed to voters to elect the Congress-NCP to save the city.

Pawar was quite vocal against the Sena-BJP rule and launched into a tirade stating that the saffron party rule was the most corrupt and had ruined the prestige of the metropolis. "The city has lost its glory owing to the sheer apathy of the people who were elected to rule the city." Further reacting to MNS chief Raj Thackeray's recent questions over the utilisation of Rs 40,000 crore with a possibility of embezzlement, Pawar added, "The questions, he has raised are serious as the person was once part of the family that is running the BMC. So I would support CM's views on probing the utilisation of funds as the money belongs to the people. Even if Sena-BJP thinks Mumbai as a proverbial hen that lays golden eggs that should remain with them, they should not forget that it belongs to people who work hard."

CM Chavan also added that he wanted the city to be rid of all communal forces and wanted to provide Mumbaikars with better amenities.

Meanwhile, cracks within the alliance were on display at the function as the Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was not present for the function along with other prominent faces. Except for South Mumbai MP and Union Minister of State Milind Deora and Mumbai North Central MP Priya Dutt, no other leaders were visible.
