Most of the names have been suggested by party ministers, MPs and MLAs. As per consensus, all of them were directly involved in selecting the candidates to take on the Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance and the MNS.
While the Congress is contesting 169 seats, its alliance partner NCP has been offered 58 seats. NCP announced its first list with 51 names on Sunday.
The Congress list contains most of the veterans in the BMC who have completed more than 2 or 3 terms. The party has accommodated Samadhan Sarvankar, son of Sada Sarvankar who has defected from MNS to join Congress. Also, Sandesh Kondwilkar, who joined the party a few years back after quitting the BJP, has been nominated from ward no 5. Pravin Chheda, who recently quit BJP to join Congress has been nominated from ward no 124.
The party has retained stalwarts such as Vinod Shekhar -- son of MLA Anni Shekhar, Samir Desai -- nephew of MP Gurudas Kamat, Kisan Jadhav -- a staunch supporter of MP Murli Deora, Suresh Koparkar and a few others.
