Mumbai: 17-year-old boy to be tried as adult for beating to death


In what could termed as first in Mumbai, a teenage boy, who was arrested along with his brother for apparently thrashing traffic constable Vilas Shinde to death would be tried as an adult. As per a report by The Times of India, the teen was spotted by Shinde on August 23 for not wearing a helmet while riding his bike.


On being asked to summon his parents, the boy's brother, who was riding pillion assaulted Vilas Shinde with a stick, after which he succumed to injuries on August 31.


Earlier, The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) has given the go-ahead for the boy's trial. Earlier, the Juvenile Justice Act was modified by the Centre to enables juvenile delinquents aged 16 and above to be tried for crimes such as rape and murder, but they won't be sentenced to life or death if found guilty.

Earlier, the JJB would try and convict an accused under 18 years of age and sentence him or her to a juvenile home for 3 years after which they would be given vocational training for reformation.
