PMC to train government, private establishments in detecting and destroying mosquito breeding sites; would take strict action against those who fail to implement precautionary measures
Following death of 13 people in the city because of dengue in the last 13 months, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to fight mosquito menace with all its might.
The PMC’s Vector Borne Disease Control Cell has now come up with a plan to train authorities of government, private establishments, including schools and colleges, in detecting and destroying mosquito breeding sites. That’s not all; the PMC has also made it clear that strict action will be taken against those who fail to implement the precautionary measures.

“Training camps will be held even in schools, colleges and housing societies, where a team of experts will educate people about vector-borne diseases. The team will use charts and other kits for teaching to ensure people understand it properly,” said Vaishali Jadhav, assistant health officer, PMC.
After educating about the disease and its preventive measures, the team will then train people in detecting mosquito breeding sites. “We’ll collect contact details of people who attend the training sessions.
Besides, we’ll appoint a person in the establishment who’ll have to ensure people put to practice whatever they have been taught. If a breeding spot is found in that establishment, the appointed person will have to face strict action. If necessary, even a case will be filed against him,” added Jadhav, who is also the in-charge of Vector Borne Disease Control Cell.
When asked about the need for strong action, she said, “We had found several breeding spots in various government and private establishments last year. This was mainly due to negligence. Hence, to avoid this in future, we have decided to take strict action.”
