Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Cooking up a storm

Mumbai-born chef Floyd Cardoz clogged timelines after winning the top spot on American TV show Top Chefs Masters. What he did, in the process, was make the humble 'upma' a trending topic toou00a0-- it's the dish that helped him win. A certain Shivam tweeted: 'Chef wins $100,000 for upma. Thank God he didn't make Chicken Biryani; they might have made him President or something.' Naomi Datta added: 'My dearly beloved upmau00a0-- I always knew I was on to a good thing! All we need now is for the world to discover my other favourite, poha.'

And, finally, this from Soumik Sen: 'Upma wins Top Chef. All Udupi restaurants make a beeline to apply for Michelin stars.'

Howzzat!
Nimish Dubey had what I thought was a rather pertinent question: 'Has any sport shown as much lack of faith in its officials as cricket has? DRS is Disgraceful, Respectless (sic) and Silly!' His comment came in the wake of Sachin Tendulkar saying he wasn't against the controversial Decision Review System, but wanted it to be more consistent.u00a0 Srinivas Bhogle put it all into perspective: 'Five years from now, we are going to be embarrassed and amused by this silly controversy.'

Whose line is it?
'Favourite Dialogue' got a lot of people to round up the usual suspects, from "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse" to "Mere paas maa hai" and "Yeh haath mujhe de de Thakur." What I liked was this cheesy one quoted by Yaswanth Sachein: 'Life is like ice cream. You have to live it before it melts.' Apparently, it's what Captain Vijaykanth said in the Tamil action film Virudhagiri.

The last word
Random tweet from actor Rahul Khanna: '3 coffees. 2 meetings. 1 workout. Stuck in traffic, watching a stray cat. Don't scintillating updates like this make you glad you follow me?' I don't follow him.
