Constable who had accompanied inmates for regular checkup to the hospital said he passed out because he had not eaten anything since Monday night
A constable escorting a bunch of undertrials from a police station to the Sassoon hospital, for a regular medical checkup, fainted at the entrance of the hospital yesterday afternoon.
Sources in the hospital said situation would have spiralled out of control had the inmates decided to take advantage of the situation. Luckily the police personnel present at the spot took charge of the inmates immediately after the incident.

Doctors said that when the constable regained consciousness, he told them that he had not eaten since Monday night and hence fainted, and injured one of his legs.
Several accused or undertrials have managed to escape in the last few years during their medical checkups, including Yogesh Raut, the prime accused in Nayana Pujari murder case.
Source from the casualty ward said, “The police official, along with his team, was accompanying the suspects when he suddenly collapsed. People around him rushed to his aid and gave him a chair to sit and water.
Doctor gave him glucose water. The officials said he had skipped his breakfast and hence fainted, and injured his leg in the accident.”
Commenting on the promptness exhibited by the doctors at the hospital, Medical Superintendent D G Kulkarni of the Sassoon General Hospital said, “Quick action by our doctors prevented the situation from going bad to worse.”
When contacted, DCP Shirish Sardeshpande of the police headquarters said, “We conduct health camps for medical checkups on a regular basis. The officials have also given a good feedback about it. For security reasons, each suspect is guarded by two police personnel.”
He added that yesterday being Shiv Jayanti, a public holiday, no court company was sent from the HQ. “The constable who fainted must be either from a local police station or from the rural police.” Sardeshpande said.u00a0
