Combined efforts
While the proposed Laxmi Road walking plaza is at a standstill with stiff opposition from shop owners; traffic police and NGO workers are jointly ensuring traffic discipline among the car drivers. "We booked about 50 cars in the first three days and 60 cars the following two days," said a traffic constable posted on Laxmi Road, requesting anonymity.

Members from the Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM) are also assisting the traffic police in regulating traffic and are asking drivers to move their cars if foundu00a0stationary. Motorists continue to park their vehicles when police officials are not around. The entire road is difficult to monitor because of the limited manpower, say traffic officials. An NGO worker, requesting anonymity, said, "We do not have legal powers because of which cars drivers do not heed to our requests. We then have to call the nearest traffic patrol van to clear the area," he added.

No vehicles

The stretch from city post chowk to Alka Talkies junction, where vehicles were parked earlier, has now been reserved for pedestrians. Barricades have been put up and hawkers have been evicted from the sidewalks.
