Five men are in custody after their attempt to rob the same jeweller twice was foiled by the police yesterday. Acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch officers picked the accused up from Byculla, as they lay in wait to rob the jeweller, who resides at Mazgaon.

According to the police, one of the accused Ashok Kumar Naynar, along with his brother-in-law Subramaniam Naynar and two other friends, had robbed jeweller Parasmal Chunilal Jain (58), in November 2011, and had fled with gold jewellery worth Rs 76 lakh that he was carrying with him.

“Last year, Jain was travelling on a motorcycle with his employee Rajesh Chaudhary, and when they reached Sarkar Towers near Cross Lane Road in Mazgaon, two bike-borne men rammed into their vehicle. After Jain and Chaudhary stopped their motorbike, one of accused snatched the bag which was placed between Jain and Chaudhary, and fled with the valuables,” said Nishikant Patil, senior police inspector of Unit II of the Crime Branch.

The accused divided the money among them, but a businessman who had tipped them off about the job and Jain’s whereabouts usurped a major share of the booty. The accused got Rs 5 lakh each, while the businessman took the remaining amount.

After spending the money, they decided to rob the same jeweller again. “So they waited for some time, and then decided to take their chances. But this time we received a tip-off and a team consisting of constables Hridinath Mishra, Subhash Mali and Pramod Shirke picked the four men from the vicinity of J J Hospital,” said Bhaskar Kadam, assistant police inspector of Unit II of the Crime Branch.

Police said that it was Ashok Kumar who had looted Jain the first time, but Subramaniam who took charge this time as he desperately needed money. He contacted Venkatesh Nadar, who runs a milk shop in Antop Hill, and is active in carrying out robberies in the area. “Nadar brings people from Tamil Nadu and then carries out robberies taking the benefit of his milk business to keep an eye on businessmen in the area. The accused were under the impression that Jain had not reported the November robbery to the police because they thought the jewellery was purchased with black money. And since they were not caught, they decided to rob him again,” said Kadam.u00a0
