Wanted in connection with two cases of housebreaking, Prakash Sitaram Raut (55) managed to evade the police for 24 years, until his desire to fulfil his civic duty did him in.

Raut was arrested in the cases and asked to appear before the court for sentencing in 1990, but he never showed up. He had been changing houses constantly since then, and keeping a low profile to evade arrest.

Senior Police Inspector Ajay Patankar of N M Joshi Marg police station said, “We had been looking for the accused and had gone to his Grant Road residence on several occasions, but the doors were locked and nobody in the area knew him well as he kept a low profile.”

Later, with the help of a local, the cops zeroed in on his voter ID details. “Raut had changed the residential address mentioned on his voter ID card so that he could vote. He had stated that he had shifted to Marol area in Andheri and we sought details from the voting office. Cops went to his residence and picked him up yesterday morning,” said Patankar.

“Raut had started working as a vegetable hawker in the Andheri area as he thought he was safe after changing his address and that he would never get arrested for crimes he had committed so long ago. We are now checking with other police stations whether he has committed any other crimes in the area,” added Patankar.

Raut, who has been arrested for housebreaking and trespassing, will be produced in court today.
