Mumbai: Cops rescue mentally, physically challenged man 3 days after mother's death

In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old mentally and physically challenged man had to spend three days without food or water after his 65-year-old mother passed away. Officials from the Mulund police station said Vinodini Nagwekar, an asthma patient, breathed her last on Tuesday night at their residence at Thakur Prem Ashish Society, Nahur Village, Mulund (W).

The incident came to light yesterday morning after the milkman checked with security guard Umesh Thappa about the family’s whereabouts.

He told Thappa that Vinodini had not collected the milk packets he had been delivering at her doorstep for the last three days.

“After the milkman inquired with me about them (Nagwekars), I immediately informed the building secretary. When the secretary visited their residence, he was put off by a strong odour coming from the flat. We then informed the Mulund police. A police team visited our building and broke open the door to the flat with the help of fire brigade officials. I had seen her (Vinodini) last on Tuesday around 6 pm, after she retuned home from the vegetable market. After that, she had not left the house,” said Thappa.

Police officials said the first thing they spotted on entering the flat was Vinodini’s partially decomposed body lying on the bed.

When they searched the house, they found her son Vishal lying helplessly on the floor. While Vinodini’s body was sent for post-mortem, Vishal was rushed to Agarwal hospital for treatment.

Natural death
Cops said prima facie it appeared that Vinodini had suffered a heart attack, but were awaiting autopsy report to exact the cause of death. They said Vishal was born with a defect that had left him mentally and physically challenged. Cops added that Vinodini had separated from her husband, who resides in Mahim, about 15 to 20 years back. Since their divorce, Vishal’s father had been taking care of their financial needs.

“For now, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered in this case. We are waiting for the autopsy report to reach the final conclusion,” said Senior Inspector Rajaram Vanmane from Mulund police station.
