Holi celebrations turned into mourning for the Rai family of Rohini after their son and daughter-in- law were crushed to death and couple's four-year-old daughter severely injured on Sunday. The incident occurred at Mukarba Chowk area in North Delhi when the couple was on its way to a relative's place.

Police said that the deceased identified as Vinay Rai (27) and his wife Deepa (23) were going to Deepa's parents' place in Seemapuri to celebrate Holi when at around 4:20 pm their motorcycle collided with a tempo. "While Deepa died on the spot, Vinay succumbed to his injuries at Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital. Their one-and-half-year-old child Chuchu escaped unhurt while four-year-old daughter Shruti suffered head injuries. The victims were residents of Rohini Sector 24," a senior police official said.

The families of the couple came to know about the incident after police made a random call from Vinay's mobile. "It happened to be that of a neighbour who then informed the family and they rushed to the hospital," the official said. Rai worked as an insurance agent while Deepa used to help him in his business from home.

"The tempo driver identified as Mangal Singh was arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash and negligent driving," the police official added.
