Has a novel initiative by Delhi's police chief gone bust? On the second day of Commissioner BK Gupta's Janta Darbar, only 15 to 17 complainants came to meet him.

Some of them have alleged they were harassed and not allowed to meet the CP. Surender Sharma, a businessman who deals in iron was one of them who had waited outside Gupta office for two hours holding his complaint but he was not allowed to go inside.

"I think the top cop is fooling people by organising such a programme. Nothing is new in his scheme. Earlier, people who used to meet the commissioner did not return disappointed. But it's happening this time," he said.
According to Sharma, he reached the Police Headquarters (PHQ) at around 11.30am. He was made to sit outside the commissioner's office by his staffer.

"At around 12 noon they (officials posted with the CP's office) made me fill a form that was required to meet Gupta. I filled the form and had to wait for an hour for my turn. I was taken before an official who accused that I was hiding something from them," said Sharma. The official allegedly kept questioning him and Sharma told him his real trouble that he had a family tiff in which local police were harassing him and he had come to complain against Aman Vihar cops to the commissioner.

"The official said that I didn't have to meet CP as the matter concerned Joint Commissioner (southern range), Amulya Patnayak. The official then took him to Patnayak's office on the sixth floor of PHQ. Patnayak reportedly told Sharma that matter was related to the northern-range and he was then taken to Jt CP, Karnail Singh's office. But Singh wasn't available. Sharma then again approached the commissioner's office and kept waiting but was told that Gupta had left.

"I would like to ask Mr Gupta not to fool me. Janta Darbar is nothing but a drama. I thought at the Darbar he will come out of his office and will meet the complainant himself, but the scene was very different," complained Sharma.

What his problem was
Sharma has his office in northwest Delhi. A house in Aman Vihar was in the name of his mother who passed away last year. The property was bequeathed to his two brothers and a sister who lives on the first floor of his house. He complained that his sister has now encroached upon the house and called the police who beat him up. Sharma said that the cop held him captive for a day at the police station, beat him up and then set him free. "I was threatened by the cop not to visit Aman Vihar area again," said Surender.
