The Central Railway, which is trying out new colour combinations for its new rakes procured by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), has, on a experimental basis, painted a single coach of an old rake in a combination of violet and off-white with an orange band running across near the roof.

The colour combination has been created by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, for the MRVC-monitored Phase-II of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project. All new rakes procured by the MRVC are to carry the colours.

"The idea behind the experiment is to ensure that the suburban local trains have an aesthetic look and are also uniformly coloured," said a CR official.

"We are still exploring various colour combinations. We have not decided if these are the colours we want on the new rakes. We will only do that once we have taken feedback from passengers in this regard," said Central Railway CPRO Srinivas Mudgerikar.

While the existing colour scheme of new MRVC coaches have been praised from all quarters, the exteriors of the coaches have been pitted with ugly pan-stains, a fact noted recently, by a World Bank team.
