At a time when an Integrated Transport System (ITS) is the need of the hour to decongest the overburdened public transport system in the city, the Railways appear to be sticking to the basics.

CR to run 15-car services by end of this month

It has been learnt that the Central Railway (CR) will be operating 15-coach trains by September-end. The move comes three years after the Western Railway (WR) first introduced 15-car services in November 2009.u00a0

The addition of three coaches will enhance carrying capacity of the trains running on the Central line by 33 per cent. At present, 4,200 commuters travel in a 12-coach train during peak hours.

The CR authorities are in the final stage of extending platforms, relocating signals, removing overhead wire poles and diverting alignment of tracks wherever necessary.

“We are looking at running 15-car services from September-end and the trains will halt at select stations,” a senior CR official said.

The CR authorities are planning to halt 15-car trains at Byculla, Dadar, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Thane, Dombivli and terminate at Kalyan, once the train starts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).

Considering that Dadar, Kurla, Thane and Kalyan have long platforms to accommodate long-distance trains, authorities said accommodating 15-coach trains at these stations would not be a difficult task.

“These 15-car trains can only offer temporary relief,” said AV Shenoy, transport expert.
