Cranberries top the list of healthy food, thanks to its high nutrient and anti-oxidant content. Many of us may not be aware of the fact that cranberries are also low in calories and can therefore be added in our daily diet like blueberries or blackberries. Here are some reasons why you should add this super food to your daily diet:


1. Prevent Urinary Tract Infections: Cranberries are excellent for those with recurrent urinary tract infections. High level of proanthocyanidins present in cranberries reduces the sticking of certain bacteria to the urinary tract walls and in turn helps fight the infection. Cranberries are best to be consumed raw or in the form of capsules.


2. Inflammation: Due to its anti- inflammatory effect, cranberries benefit those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or stomach and digestive disorders. It also strengthens our cardiovascular system, particularly the lining of our vessel walls.

3. Heart diseases: Including cranberries in our daily diet benefits cardiovascular health because of factors like antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory effects and improvement of high and low cholesterol. Polyphenols present in the berries prevent the growth of plaque on the vessel walls. It also reduces blood pressure.

4. Dental health: Strange but true, cranberries prevent growth and sticking of bacteria in our teeth and gum area. Anti-inflammatory effects of phytonutrients present in cranberries decrease inflammation in and around our gums. Daily consumption of cranberries can therefore prevent periodontal disease.

5. Protects against cancer: Researchers have identified that cranberries prevent or slower the growth of tumours in human body. Cranberry consumption leaves positive impact on breast, ovarian, prostate, lungs and colon cancer.

6. Ulcers: Cranberries help prevent a type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori to stick to our stomach lining, which in turn restricts the development of stomach ulcers. Include cranberries in your daily diet to keep yourself away from stomach ulcers.

Do remember to keep yourself away from sweetened cranberry yogurt or dried cranberries. Fresh whole cranberries are the most helpful options. These can be kept in the refrigerator for a year and consumed in different forms, like, smoothies, cranberry salsa etc.
