Saurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu rose from the reserves to lift Mumbai Indians (MI) to 173-5 as the visitors, assured of a top-two finish for the play offs, decided to rest as many as six from their previous match.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), needing victory in the top-of-the-table clash to clinch their 'Q1' berth, were struggling at 128-6 after 14.1 overs.

Manish Pandey was unbeaten on 23 at the time of going to press.

Tim Southee and Mitchel Johnson, replacements both, ensured KKR didn't get off to the flier they have been accustomed to in recent matches.

Southee removed Sunil Narine in the very first over without conceding a run. The others chipped in and the reply was soon in tatters with Chris Lynn, skipper Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa too back in the pavilion.

Tiwary, playing his first match for MI, came away with a 43-ball 52 that had nine boundaries while Rayudu, having suffered a groin injury in Mumbai's first match, came back to hit 63 off 37 with six fours and three sixes.
