Chain of events
Shelar said, “We had started our night patrol at 9 pm on Saturday from the Ghorpadi Gaon police chowky. Kodag was riding the motorcycle and I was riding pillion with a carbine gun in my hand. As we passed the stalls in the market area, we saw some youth drinking liquor there. One of them was Nayak who was known to us. We approached them and told them they
could not drink liquor there and asked them to leave. Nayak tried to convince us to allow them to continue their party, but we refused. We also took down the names of the other three youth present with Nayak.”

Nayak and his friends left the place only to return after the cops left. After receiving another call, police constables Kodag and Shelar proceeded to the spot again and found the four men drinking there again. When questioned, the
accused claimed that they had returned to collect their mobile handsets.

“Patole stood in front of our motorcycle and stopped us from going ahead. At the same time, Pawar hit Kodag on the head with a sickle. When I tried to help Kodag, Paul attacked me with another sickle, targeting my back and hand,” Shelar added.
‘Influential’

Police Inspector Rajendra Chavan, from Mundhwa police station, said, “Nayak is known for the influence he has in the Ghorpadi market area. The other accused are his friends who have a criminal past. Patole has one case, while Paul has two offences registered against him at different police stations across the city. We have got the location details of the other three accused and will arrest them soon.”
