The Delhi Urban Arts Commission has forced the authorities to redesign a Commonwealth Games project to save trees that were coming in the way
With the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) refusing to give permission to fell 14 trees coming in the way of a project for Commonwealth Games 2010, the officials have redesigned the plan to accommodate the trees.
The project in question is an upcoming athletic training venue and a parking lot at Chattrasaal stadium at Model Town in North Delhi for the prestigious international sports event. The government had sought felling of 14 trees for the construction of the project as well constructing parking area in the basement of the Stadium to park the buses for the upcoming global event.
However, noting that umpteen trees have become victim of various projects and in many cases they could have been saved with little change in designs, the Commission refused to give permission and instead asked the government to accommodate the trees.
DUAC on its own also suggested to do so by providing a cut out in the central portion of the basement parking which would save ten trees and other four by reduction of one bay of the Athlete block. Sensing that delay would hamper the construction given the fast approaching games event, the officials took pain to redesign the project to incorporate trees.
"We have agreed to reduce size of athletic block from 42.6 meters to 40.6 meters which would save four trees," a senior Delhi Government official told PTI here.
