First, it was BJP National Secretary Kirit Somaiya. Then, it was BJP corporator Girish Bapat who alleged Congress corporators in the city were involved in contracts and sub-contracts for Commonwealth Games (CWG) works. "There are some people in the city who have got contracts for the CWG event," Bapat said.
Bapat said that Congress former corporators Bapu alias Sambhaji Naik was given a contract for CWG. However, he died in a freak accident in Delhi when the frame of a stage collapsed and fell on him causing serious head injuries. This happened on June 3, 2010, when he had gone to the headquarters of the Organising Committee of the CWG.
Abhay Chhajed, Congress city president, however, refuted the charges and said Naik had gone to Delhi for some personal work.
Anant Gadgil, the state general secretary, who had first raised voice against the alleged CWG scam and criticised Kalmadi openly refused to comment. "We have strict orders from the Congress high command that nobody will speak about CWG corruption openly till the inquiry committee reports are out. The report is expected to come in the next three months," he said.
