Spam mails and SMSes offering tickets and passes to the gala event doing the rounds

Marketing executive Shashank Agarwal could not believe his luck after getting an SMS, which said that the Commonwealth Committee had selected his number and he was eligible to get free tickets to the mega games carnival to be held in Delhi. But when he called back on the number to claim his reward Shashank sensed some foul play and discovered that it was a fraud.

Various SMSes are doing the rounds, luring the public in the name of Commonwealth Games. One such message reads: "You have won 2.5 lakh British pounds in Common Wealth Games Delhi 2010 promo, for payment contact via email -cwgdelhi2010.in.com@gmail."

According to the cyber crime experts, all the SMSes and mails circulating in the name of Commonwealth Games, some of them also carrying the Games logos, are fake and sent out to target innocent users. "During all mega events such spam messages are circulated as people are curious and end up getting fooled. But attacking users via the mobile route is something new and will attract many more potential targets," said Vivek Vohra, a Delhi- based cyber crimes expert.

After FIFA 2010, when many football fans fell victim to alluring e-mails and SMSes, here is a spam mail with the subject: "DELHI 2010 XIX COMMONWEALTH GAMES." The mail says: "This is an e-mail notification to inform you that your e-mail address has won you a cash prize of 715,000.00 GBP on our Delhi 2010 XIX commonwealth online lottery sweepstakes promotion draws held on 28th of July, 2010 in London, United Kingdom."
UNSPORTING CONDUCT

This is not the first instance when the Commonwealth name has been used for illegal purposes. Earlier, MiD DAY had reported how some escort agencies were using the Games emblem for promoting prostitution. Delhi police conducted a raid recently at a shop and seized merchandise and accessories including fake logos of the Commonwealth Games.
