The proposed demolition of the popular temple in Dadar (East) has faced resistance from devotees who frequent it

Devotees who frequent Ram Mandir in Dadar (East) to receive the lord's blessings may soon have to seek another holy sanctuary, at least for a while, as the popular temple faces demolition.

The trust, which owns the land on which the temple is located, has decided to sell the plot to a builder for redevelopment into a skyscraper.

The temple, which is situated within Kothari Mansion near Chitra talkies on Dr Ambedkar Road, is owned by Shri Thakurji Maharaj Dharmada, a religious and charitable trust.

Tenders for sale of the property were invited last May, after which a leading developer won the contract for redevelopment of the plot, shelling out Rs 4 crore for the deal.

Learning of the pending demolition, the many devotees who frequent the temple undertook a signature campaign to decry the move.

Professor Manisha Kayande has often visited the temple to pray. Speaking to MiD DAY, she said, "We have fond memories of the temple, and naturally we don't want the land to be sold off.

The priest who has been living inside the temple premises for more than 30 years was recently approached by the builder's men, who asked him to vacate the premises."

A devotee, who has been frequenting the temple for the last 30 years, said, "This mandir is not the only place of worship.

However, we are very attached to it, and have been organising various cultural and social events within its premises for years now."

Kayande added, "Before selling the land owned by any trust, it is compulsory for the trust to take permission from the Charity Commissioner."

MiD DAY visited the Charity Commission office to check if the land was being built in keeping with required legal norms.

An official said, "We have to check if we have received any proposal from the trust. They cannot ask anyone to vacate the plot without receiving our permission."

The devotees are now planning to approach the court to prevent their beloved temple from being torn down.u00a0
