The heart of a Dahanu resident, who lost his life in an accident during dahi handi festivities was transplanted into a 22-year-old Mumbai woman with end-stage heart disease. The transplant was possible after the heart was transported from Surat on a commercial flight because arranging a chartered aircraft was not possible due to the rains.

This could be the first time that a human organ was transported for transplant via a commercial flight, according to doctors.

According to Hindustan Times, 30-year-old Vilas Ghatal suffered a head injury during Janmashtami festivities on August 15 near a small village in Valsad, Gujarat. He slipped and fell while trying to untie a rope strung up for the competition on a tree.

Ghatal was first rushed to a local hospital and later to a medical college after his condition worsened where he was diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage.

Vilas Ghatal's family members consented to donate his organs at the request of an NGO who approached them. He was then shifted to Surat Civil Hospital (SCH), where his heart was retrieved for a transplant.

A recipient was identified at Mulund's Fortis Hospital through the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) Maharashtra.

The heart was retrieved by a team of transplant surgeons under Dr Anvay Mule, who reached Surat at 7 am. Since a chartered air ambulance couldn't be arranged due to the rains, a flight from Surat to Mumbai was taken at 7:15 am, according to ROTTO sources.

86 minutes later the heart was transported via green corridor to Mulund.
