Lesser threat

Devendra Joshi, organiser of Sankalp Dandiya Utsav where Falguni performs, confirmed the news, but refused to pinpoint recession as the cause. "An insurance advisor advises us on the amount.

Last year, he had suggested a bigger amount because of the possibility of a terror attack. This year, he has recommended a blanket insurance cover for the performers because there is a lesser threat."

K G Rao, COO, Future Generali India Insurance Company, which has provided insurance cover to Sankalp explained, "We have insured the mandal for Rs 1.97 crore.

This includes Rs 1 crore for the troupe, Rs 50 lakh for assets in case of burglary or terror attack, and Rs 25 lakh for participants."

The remaining amount is insured for the transfer of cash from the pandal at Goregaon to the Sankalp office at Vile Parle, a distance of nearly 20 km. Approximately 15,000 people attend the Sankalp event on weekdays and 20,000 during weekends.

Other big mandals like the Dandiya Utsav with Nilesh Thakkar and Beat 16 Band at Kora Kendra, Borivli, are insured for Rs 4.96 crore one of the highest insured navratri mandals.

To prevent any untoward incident, mandals have beefed up security.

Pankaj Kotecha of Kora Kendra Dandiya said they have installed CCTVs at every corner of the ground to keep a watch on suspicious activities during the festival.

Devendra Joshi of Sankalp said, "The police and the bomb squad will inspect the venue every day. We will hold the event only after getting a safety assurance from the police."
