David Beckham's proposed salary of 700,000 pounds a month to play in France has outraged the left-wing politicians in the country with MPs from the Socialist Party demanding for a law to cap such high salaries.

The former England captain, whose contract with Los Angeles Galaxy will expire soon, is set to move to Paris Saint-Germain in January on an 18-month contract that would make him France's highest-paid sports star.

According to the daily newspaper Le Parisien, there was an agreement 'in principle' for Beckham to join PSG.

But even before the paperwork has been signed the footballer's massive pay packet has brought a backlash from the Socialist Party.

"I'm fed up with these sky-high salaries, and it's not just in football," the Daily Mail quoted Jean-Marc Ayrault, an MP for the Socialist Party, as saying.

"The Socialists are proposing a law that would put in place a maximum salary and end these unbelievable pay deals," he said.

Fellow Socialist MP Jean-Christophe Cambadelis branded 36-year-old Beckham 'an ageing star'.

"His 800,000 euros a month plus colossal marketing income could bring his wages to 17million euros a year. That is really not going to go down very well in the poor Paris housing estates," Cambadelis said in his blog.

PSG's hugely wealthy owners Qatar Sport Investments are said to have offered the Beckhams 'anything they want' to lure the footballer to France's richest club.

Apart from the pay packet, the family will also be provided with a new home in the Paris area and school places for his sons Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, nine, and six-year-old Cruz.

Green Party presidential candidate Eva Joly, who recently accused Beckham of moving to Paris from LA Galaxy merely to 'sell T-shirts', described his proposed earnings as 'outrageous'.

"It is shocking given the current economic crisis," she said.
