This apology was found scrawled in a 24-year-old MBA student’s notebook yesterday, after she jumped to her death from the sixth floor of a building. She had been under intense pressure from her family members, ever since she revealed to her mother that she had married her boyfriend in a clandestine ceremony.
A Second Year MBA student in Mumbai University, Sonal Bagade lived in the D’Mello compound in Vakola with her mother Maya, who worked as a nurse at a civic run hospital in Sewri.
According to the police, Sonal had married her boyfriend in utter secrecy. About five days ago, she decided to break the news of her secret wedding to her mother. Wearing a saree and sindoor adorning her forehead, she appeared before her mother.
Flying into a rage, Maya refused to accept the marriage. Over the next few days, she used several tactics to convince Sonal to break ties with her husband. She even confiscated the SIM card from Sonal’s mobile phone.
Two days ago, Sonal went to stay at her aunt’s place in Shree Samarth building in Santacruz East. According to the police, her stay at her aunt’s place was a tense one, as the members of the family were embroiled in heated arguments, putting pressure on Sonal to take back her decision and sever all ties with her husband.
Police Inspector Uttam Pachpute of Vakola police station said, “Last morning at 9 am, Sonal jumped from the sixth floor. She was rushed to
V N Desai hospital nearby, but was declared dead on arrival. She died due to severe head injuries and heavy loss of blood. A suicide note was found in her notebook in which she apologised for her actions.”
A mobile phone was recovered from Sonal, containing photographs of her secret wedding. Pachpute said, “We are trying to contact her husband, but his cell phone is switched off. Once we get in touch with him, we will question him. After which we will decide whether to lodge a case or not.”u00a0
