Perth: Dean Elgar and JP Duminy struck centuries as South Africa took a stranglehold on the first Test against Australia on Saturday.

Resuming on 104 for two in their second innings — an overall lead of 102 — opener Elgar and Duminy stretched their third-wicket partnership to 250 over the first two sessions of Day Three, with the latter’s departure for 141 signalling the tea interval.

The hosts did enjoy some success with the ball in the evening, dismissing Elgar for a career-best 127 and then also Temba Bavuma (eight) and captain Faf du Plessis (32), but South Africa closed on 390 for six — 388 ahead — and will be much the happier of the two teams heading into day four at the WACA Ground.

The tourists had begun Saturday’s play on the front foot, having seized the initiative by taking 10 Australia wickets for 86 runs on Friday, and Elgar and Duminy efficiently pressed home that advantage.

The pair reached their respective fifties with stylish shots as they sailed through to lunch unscathed.
