Intelligence sources say terror attacks possible in high-security areas using aerial vehicles

Delhi police is busy clearing the air. This after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has received reports of probable attacks using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) during the Commonwealth Games.

Sources say terrorist groups can use toy UAVs for attacks in high security zones where they can't enter. Such UAVs are able to carry significant amount of explosives, which can cause serious damage.

Last year, a child in Gurdwara Rakabganj was operating a toy chopper, that landed near the Parliament premises, exposing security loopholes. A top police official confirmed that they have trained the cops in a new format to tackle these threats.

"Specially trained personal have been deployed on the ground and they are prepared to tackle any possible threat," said a senior police officer. Around one lakh cops of different ranks have been equipped to tackle this new danger.

Snipers deployed in VVIP areas have been coached to shoot and kill moving targets and have also been whipped into shape to hunt down suspected UAVs before they pose any threat or get close to any VIP or high-security area. Special weapons are also being deployed to track and hit such aerial vehicles. The new toy UAVs are powerful enough to travel up to 500 metres. The top hunters of such UAVs will be double-teamed snipers.

The cops have also been trained in operating remote devices to counter such attacks. Armour-piercing rounds are also being brought for the special teams deployed for the security of CWG. The usual metal armour can easily penetrated by such bullets.

ODD MAN OUT
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV; also known as a remotely piloted vehicle or RPV, or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)) is an aircraft that flies without a human crew on board the aircraft. Their largest uses are in military applications. To distinguish UAVs from missiles, a UAV is defined as a reusable, uncrewed vehicle capable of controlled, sustained, level flight and powered by a jet or reciprocating engine.
