The University of Pune (UoP) yesterday appointed Dr BD Naik as the head of re-evaluation department — the position that was lying vacant after the arrest of Lalsingh Wasave, the deputy registrar of the varsity. Wasave was arrested for his alleged involvement in the re-evaluation scam.
Vice-Chancellor Dr WN Gade handed over the charge of reassessment department to Deputy Registrar BD Naik, who was till now handling the admissions department.
According to sources, Naik was hesitant to take charge following the scam that surfaced recently. Yesterday, he even met the V-C and conveyed his thoughts. However, after some persuasion, he agreed.
When contacted, Naik has refused to comment. However, speaking to MiD DAY, Dr Gade said, “I have met officials of all the departments. There is a bit of anxiety amongst the employees. I’ll hold regular meeting in the next couple of days and will try to boost the morale of our officials.”
As per the rule, all the four arrested officials of the exam department will suspended. “We have to follow the law. The procedure (suspension) is a part of the process,” told Gade.
On Saturday, the Chatushrungi police had arrested Deputy Registrar Wasave, Assistant Registrar Rajendra Pandit, Senior Clerk Nanda Pawar and staffer Surendra Naidu. All of them are in police custody and will be presented before the court today.
UoP to start Students’ Welfare Division soon
The UoP has decided to start Students’ Welfare Division (SWD), which will look into the problems related to the infrastructural facilities provided by the varsity.
“The proposed SWD will have an advisory committee and students’ representatives will be a part of it. An official of the level of a professor will be the director of the SWD,” said Vice-Chancellor Dr WN Gade. He added that the department would work to enhance facilities provided to the students in the varisty campus. “During the upcoming management council meeting, we’ll get the final approval to establish the SWD,” he said. The UoP administration had proposed the formation of the SWD in last management council meeting. The next management council meet is scheduled to be held on January 22.
