Newly-opened Lomchin Wok in Mulund cooks up a delicious Oriental experience with an Indian twist without burning a hole in the pocket
In an attempt to ward off our Monday blues, we dropped by Mulund's Lomchin Wok for an Oriental meal. The crowds inside at 10.30 pm reassured us that we were in for a deliciously memorable experience. While the decor was basic we decided to let the food do the talking. And since we love the hybrid version of desi Chinese cuisine packed with Indian flavours, we were eager to go for the kill.
We started off with Veg Fried Wonton (Rs 65) and Mongolian Chicken (Rs 90) as appetisers. The Wanton was crispy albeit a tad over-fried for our liking. We had no such grouse for the Mongolian Chicken which was delicious and polished off in no time. With chunks of chicken coated with ingredients including pepper, spring onion, garlic and capsicum, it packed quite a punch and spiced up things.
Next up, we tried the Prawn Samui Momos (Rs 155) mostly because it reminded us of Thailand's stunningly picturesque Koh Samui Isles. The momos were delectable thanks to the succulent juiciness of the prawns. For the main course, we chose the Veg Korean Fried Rice (Rs 80) and the Prawn Oriental Fried Rice (Rs 120).
The Korean Fried Rice was a tad bland but the Prawn Oriental Fried Rice was a perfect blend of spices; we loved the peppery flavour that every portion of prawn was imbued with. Realising that their non-veg selection was a safer bet compared to their vegetarian fare, we ordered the Lamb Schezwan (Rs 120). It was a smart choice: the tender lamb pieces in a spicy mix left us satiated.
We wrapped up our meal with Date Panket (Rs 50): this dessert included dates stuffed inside a flaky sesame seed encrusted dough coated with honey. The sesame seed overpowered the flavour of the dates and the honey, but if you are looking for a low-on-sugar dessert, this tastes like one.
The service was polite but confused; often they were unable to tell one dish from the other. Still, full marks for prompt service. In between helpings we were left engaged by a few mentions on the menu: 'Minral water', 'Tripal Rice' and our favourite -- 'Three Tezer Hot Dragon Dry' -- which we are still trying to figure out. In hindsight, we would readily forgive these teething glitches for the overall satisfaction and experience.
