Despite collapses, BMC sits on demolition of dilapidated structures

The track record of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s treatment of buildings that are on the dilapidated list may be a cause for worry, given about four structures collapsed this monsoon. There are buildings on the list for over three years but have not been demolished yet and some haven’t even been evacuated.

About 104 properties on the list are at various stages of redevelopment, but most of them were constructed before 1940. A senior BMC official said that these redevelopments are of buildings that have been listed as dilapidated for many years.

There are about 78 dilapidated buildings in the city, which have not been demolished yet, and the number of the same was about 55 last year. Although they have been put on the list for the past three years, officials claim they have been listed for many years now but could not be vacated.

Of the 55 buildings listed last year, 34 were evacuated only this year after the Mumbra and Mahim building collapses created fear amongst residents, claimed a BMC official. Chandrashekhar Chore, assistant municipal commissioner, said, “We did not manage to evacuate any buildings last year and this year about 34 were vacated. However, none of them have been demolished yet as demolition is a long process.

We will first demolish those that are a threat to adjoining societies.” “There are about 104 BMC properties including hospitals, schools, offices, staff quarters, which are at various stages of redevelopment. The redevelopment of 36 of those properties is close to completion,” he added.u00a0
