SPENDING three months in different hospitals and undergoing six surgeries after a bike accident did not deter a committed 17-year-old from appearing for his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams.

Saeem Shaikh Bhikan, a Pydhonie resident, was going to Deonar with his cousin on a bike on November 12 to check the prices of goats ahead of Bakri Eid when a car rammed them from behind.

The bike skid for a considerable distance with Bhikan's right leg trapped under it, resulting in multiple fractures and burns from the silencer.

Since his parents and brother had gone for the Haj, Bhikan was looked after by his relatives. He was initially taken to Sion Hospital. When his parents came back, he was shifted to Prince Ali Khan Hospital in Mazgaon, then to Noor hospital in Byculla and finally to Saifee Hospital in Charni road.

Rafique Shaikh Bhikan, his father, said, "We were not in Mumbai when Saeem met with an accident. However, whenever we spoke, he assured us that he was alright. He said that he wasn't only preparing for his exams but was sure he would do well.

We had to shift hospitals all the time because we were not sure if he was getting the right treatment. I was relieved when his leg finally showed some improvement after several surgeries at Saifee."

"Saeem did not want to appear for his boards from the hospital and, seeing his commitment doctors decided to discharge him on February 21 a day ahead of the exams. I am very proud that he is appearing for his exam despite the pain he is undergoing."

"I went for my practical exams to college and my vice principal and other staff members helped me move around. I had to be admitted again for skin grafting on February 14 but the doctors were nice enough to discharge me ahead of my exams. I am also preparing for the CET and am thinking of becoming a doctor," said

Bhikan Meghna Gupte, principal, Bhavan's College, said, u00a0"There is a boy who had fractured his leg and we are giving him whatever help he needs. He has been given a chair to rest his leg on to ensure he can write his exams comfortably."
