However, India's fortunes have changed dramatically in the last few weeks. After taking a decisive 3-0 lead in the five-match one-day international series against Alastair Cook's team, Dhoni's men will aim to win the fourth one-dayer at the Wankhede Stadium today to stay on course for a 5-0 whitewash and erase the English tour nightmare.
It can be recalled that India beat New Zealand 5-0 last year. Ajinkya Rahane, one of India's stars of the series so far, credited skipper Dhoni for the team's turnaround. "We did well in England too, but there are times in cricket when results don't go your way. Obviously, it hurts if you fail to win any match (on England tour).
We know the conditions here and have taken advantage of that. Mahibhai has done well to keep the team together. The players are backing each other. We discuss each other's performances," he said on the eve of the match.
"The youngsters have done well; the team management and the seniors have been very helpful," added the 23-year-old.
Clean sweep not on our minds
The Mumbai lad said a clean sweep is not on our minds. "We are not looking at tomorrow's game with a 5-0 scoreline in mind. We are 3-0 up but have to start afresh. We are taking one game at a time," Rahane insisted.
Rahane, who clinched his first man-of-the-match award in the last ODI at Mohali with a magnificent 91, said he thrives under pressure. "Little pressure is good as it helps you concentrate better.
Mahibhai told me to back myself. I wanted to give myself some time to settle down. "I was obviously disappointed at not getting a century, but after your team wins, it gives you more satisfaction. It is a big moment for me to represent a world champion team on my home ground," said Rahane.
