In a surprise move, Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down as captain of the Indian ODI and T20 teams yesterday, thereby drawing curtains to his leadership career.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a press release said that Dhoni has informed the board about his wish to step down as the captain in both the formats. Dhoni's sudden decision may have surprised many but not the former chairman of selectors Kiran More. Rather, the former India stumper said, Dhoni has set an example in Indian cricket for others to follow.

"When he retired from Test cricket, I felt he was good enough for another 100 Tests. But that's Dhoni for you. He has always listened to his heart and has always done things which are good for Indian cricket. When he quit Test cricket he knew that there are others in the team who can give better results than him and he decided to go," said More.

"Even now, I am not surprised by his decision. He must have felt that with the Champions Trophy coming and the World Cup next, someone else, Virat Kohli in this case, can be a better choice to lead the team. And that's the reason why he has decided to give up the captaincy," added the Vadodara-based stumper.

More added that it must be Dhoni's personal decision but there is a lot of merit in it, something that needs to be applauded and respected.

"When you are so successful as a captain, it is very difficult to give up leadership. By doing this, he has actually set an example in Indian cricket for others to follow," added More.
