India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni expressed his sorrow at the bomb blasts in Mumbai that killed 17 people and left more than a hundred injured.

But he also backed the city to show the same "resilience" it displayed three years ago when 166 people were killed there during a 60-hour assault by gunmen.

"I think it is very sad," said Dhoni. "Wherever it happens, whether it is in India or in any other city around the world, it is a sad event.

"Hopefully we'll see things like this not really happening in the future."

It was only in April that Dhoni led India to a World Cup final victory against Sri Lanka in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium -- the home ground of India batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who heads into next week's first Test against England at Lord's just one shy of a hundred international hundreds.

Dhoni said he hoped Mumbai would recover from Wednesday's attacks.

"I think it is a sad day but, at the same time, Mumbai has shown resilience when it comes to activities like this, so I'm very hopeful it will stand up again and be at its best."

India begin their tour of England on Friday with a three-day game against county side Somerset in Taunton.
