When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Vignesh G, Sudarshan Shetty and Vaibhav Mane, HSC students, are classic examples of the old adage.u00a0Despite undergoing dialysis, thrice a week, Vignesh G, a student of Mithibai College scored 76.17 per cent. For Sudarshan Shetty, who had met with an accident on the very first day of his exam and wrote his paper in the ambulance, 79.33 per cent is the testament of his determination. While Vikas Mane, whose house was reduced to rubble during a demolition drive on March 2, managed a first class.u00a0These were some of the cases that came to the fore, as the HSC results were declared yesterday afternoon.
Strong-willed Shetty
Fr. Noel Pinto, assistant director of Sneha Sadan in Andheri, where Sudarshan Shetty had been residing before he was recently reunited with his family, is all praises for the young lad. Applauding his determination, Fr Pinto said, “Sudarshan Shetty met with an accident on the first day of his examination. But the boy did not give up.

He decided to write his exam in the ambulance. Shetty, a resident of Thane, was residing at Sneha Sadan since 2004. After the reports of his accident were published in the media, Shetty’s parents traced him to Sneha Sadan. Today, he is back with his family. We are proud that Shetty scored 79.33 per cent in HSC exams, irrespective of all the pain he went through. He is very career-oriented and a studious boy. We wish him all the best and congratulate him on behalf of entire Sneha Sadan.”
Rising from debris
When Vaibhav Mane, a student of Bhavan’s College in Andheri, lost his house to a demolition drive in Golibar area, chances of him clearing his HSC exam were razed too. Unfazed, Vaibhav worked harder and cleared the exam with a first class.
“I had expected above 75 per cent, as I want to pursue engineering. Though I’ve scored less (60.83), I’m happy that I have at least qualified for the CET exam, which requires a minimum of 50 per cent. Though my house was demolished, I didn’t allow it to interfere with my preparations. As of now I’m eagerly awaiting my CET results.”
‘Scored better than expected’
Vignesh G, said, “I am very happy with what I have scored. I had set my goal at 70 per cent, but I scored even better, 76.17 per cent. As of now I’ve kept BAF, BFM and BCom as my options. But the final decision will be taken once I get my marksheet. Since I want to become a Chartered Accountant, I’ll be appearing for the CA exam in December.

” Vignesh’s father, Ganesh, said, “Yesterday, Vignesh was on dialysis, and today were his exam results. We are extremely happy with his score. His college has supported and cooperated a lot. Vignesh will have to undergo dialysis until his kidneys are transplanted. I had asked him to go easy and avoid stressing himself out, but if he is determined to go ahead and give more exams, then I won’t stop him.”

Passing stats
This year, the overall passing percentage of HSC students — fresh and repeater — in Mumbai stands at 68.66 per cent, a per cent less than the previous year (69.52 per cent). The overall passing percentage of freshers for the city is 76.1.

Ravindra Bhise, secretary of Mumbai Division, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, said, “This year, the number of students appearing for the HSC exam was up by 11,000. This is the reason why the overall passing percentage dipped by one. As per the law, the board helped over 1,000 students from handicap and disable categories. Even this year, more than 259 students submitted their forms late, but the board accepted their forms and allowed them to appear for the exam.” While students can check the results online, marksheets will be given at their respective colleges on June 2 at 3 pm. Starting this year, HSC students, under the Right to Information, can apply for photocopies of their answer sheets. To do so, students will have to file a written application before June 8 and would be required to pay Rs 400 per subject.
