Husband of deceased says she was under severe pressure after she was suspended; hospital denies suspension

Top Lilavati Hospital anaesthetist Dr Suvarna Gudibanda died on Friday morning, her husband Dr C K Gudibanda, who is a cardiac surgeon, said of a "heart attack".

Dr Suvarna (61) may have been under severe pressure since September 2008 because of a patient Najma Khan. Najma, the wife of Hyderabad-based businessman Mehmood Khan, was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in September last year, to undergo removal of the uterus. Najma was celebrity gynaecologist Dr Kiran Coelho's patient. The anaesthetist was Dr Suvarna.

Najma Khan did not emerge normal after entering the operation theatre that day. Something went wrong and Najma is unable to walk or talk since that day. Five months down the line, she continues to be at the Lilavati Hospital. Mehmood Khan did not wish to comment on the case at this juncture.u00a0 Dr Coelho claimed Najma Khan is showing some "improvement" and "it was an anaesthesia problem".

"Dr Suvarna was consequently suspended by the hospital," says Dr C K Gudibanda, though Dr N Trivedi, vice-president and spokesperson, Lilavati Hospital, denied that she had been suspended.u00a0 "An inspector from the Bandra police station had questioned Suvarna recently about her qualifications," added Dr C K Gudibanda.

He also claimed that he was unaware of the buzz in the medical fraternity about his wife committing suicide. "It was a heart attack 99 per cent," he said sadly adding that, "We have been married for more than 30 years. She was to be a grandmother this year."
